Many important articles have appeared in the journal over the years, and it continues to attract high quality submissions. Daniel Layman (Davidson) was appointed editor in 2022.Įach issue contains a number of refereed articles on topics pertaining to Locke, provided by a wide circle of scholars. Benjamin Hill (Western) was named interim editor. The home of Locke Studies was also moved from the University of York to The University of Western Ontario, with the support of Western Philosophy and Western Libraries, and Prof. And, for the first time, an Editorial Board was established to oversee the journal. The decision was also made to make the archive of the journal electronically available and openly accessible (online ISSN 2561-925X).
In 2018 the decision was made to publish the journal electronically and as an open access publication. Timothy Stanton (York, UK) took over the editorship in 2013 and continued building the base of the journal around its core mission. Hall continued to edit the journal after his retirement from York, UK (1994) and continued to compile the "Recent Publications" section of the journal until 2015. Beginning with the 2001 issue, the journal was renamed Locke Studies (print ISSN 1476-0290). From 1970 to 2000 it was published as The Locke Newsletter, but a change of name became necessary, as the previous title was misleading to those who had not watched the journal grow in size, scope, and importance. The journal was founded and edited for 43 years by Roland Hall (York, UK). In 2018, the journal migrated to The University of Western Ontario, where it is published by Western Libraries with support from Western Philosophy. It provides a scholarly forum for the free exchange of knowledge and ideas about Locke, his thought, and his contributions. It publishes peer-reviewed original research into Locke's thought (Articles), peer-reviewed critical commentary on books or recent trends within Locke scholarship (Review Articles), reviews of newly published books on Locke or his contemporaries and intellectual milieu (Book Reviews), research queries, notes, and informal discussions (Queries, Notes, and Discussions) and a comprehensive listing of scholarship on Locke published in the past calendar year (Recent Scholarship). Locke Studies is an open-access, peer-reviewed annual journal devoted to contemporary research on any aspect of the life and work of the great English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704).
